2012 has been a busy year for New York DJ Scott Melker and his performance alias, The Melker Project. You’ve probably seen a few of his releases on P&P including The Melker Project 2, a mash-up album he created using nearly 200 samples, and the political insta-classic “Binders Full Of Women” Mitt Romney remix song.
Melker has built a name for himself largely on these types of remix/mash-up projects that in the past he’d typically released for free. While we as music fans appreciated that, the original curators of the songs sampled in many cases did not. That led to multiple copyright infringements and cease and desist letters targeted at the DJ. Rather than give up on his passion, Melker discovered a creative way to avoid additional legal issues by collaborating with a platform called Legitmix.com. Founded in 2010, the site allows artists like The Melker Project to create, upload, and sell their mash-up mixes for a profit, all without the fear of legal recourse. This works because in order for someone to purchase one of the created tracks, they must already own a version of the original songs sampled on their computer or buy them if they do not.
It’s through this new partnership that The Melker Project is now able to release its latest album, Popped And Screwed – Best of 2012, a celebration of some of this year’s most popular songs mashed up with previous tracks from artists like T.I., Bone Crusher, Jay-Z, Eminem, Biggie and many more.
