After releasing the soul-bearing “XYXY,” Mesita returns with another equally splendid single from his upcoming album Future Proof. “Hostages” is an intriguing composition, a mix of gorgeous, distant keys and kinetic, sporadic drums. The sum ebbs and flows with haunting energy, breaking for a big chorus and ultimately boiling up to a percussive, wordless climax before fading away. It’s an entrancing three and a half minutes that bodes well for Future Proof.
