Choir Of Young Believers - "Hollow Talk"

1.

First of all, this song is by no means new – it comes from an album released in 2008 called This Is For The White In Your Eyes. It is however, new to me, thanks to the recommendation of a friend, and most importantly, it is really rather excellent. Choir Of Young Believers, contrary to their name, is the musical project of one man, Jannis Noya Makrigiannis, a musician of Danish, Greek and Indonesian descent, who is joined by a rotating cast of musicians who help him achieve the solemn, multi-instrumental grandeur of many of his songs.

“Hollow Talk,” my introduction to the band, glides mournfully along for three minutes, led by Jannis’ softly angelic voice, before unfurling and exploding into widescreen orchestral-pop which fans of Fleet Foxes will certainly enjoy. Choir Of Young Believers’ album This Is For The White In Your Eyes is shot through with a melodic mix of folk and pop, while 2012 release, Rhine Gold, experimented with a bigger, punchier sound. Both albums can be heard in full on YouTube.
