In the video for Tanlines‘ propulsive, melancholy new single “Not the Same,” the Brooklyn duo pulls a “Hey Ya,” inhabiting the roles of a band of doppelgangers all playing different instruments. Even though this particular treatment has been tried before, Tanlines–who directed the video–balance the inherent comedy of a musical clone army with their usual cool and a hint of sadness far removed from the bright lights that shown on Andre 3000’s fake band in the aforementioned Outkast hit. The clever clip hints at the subtle sonic variety the band has exhibited in 2012, while slyly playing off the chorus’ call, “we’re not the same!”
