Check Out This Indie Pop Act That Worked on Kendrick Lamar's New Album

1.

It’s interesting to discover some of the players behind an album like Kendrick Lamar‘s. As a final product, and probably thanks to the team of professionals that works with/for Dr.Dre, Good Kid, m.A.A.d. City is incredibly cohesive. Even more impressive is the number of people who had a hand in the project.

One of the names on the credits is “Anna Wise of Sonnymoon.” Sonnymoon started as a duo made up of vocalist Anna and producer Dane Orr and they recently added Tyler Randall and Joe Welch to the line-up. They make interesting, electronically driven indie pop that stays away from the heavy-handed synth sound often associated with words like “electronic” and “pop.” So how did Anna end up on Kendrick Lamar’s album? She explained in an interview with Portadelphia:

“Well, I was in the studio when he was recording it. I sang background vocals on some of the tracks on his album and Kendrick gave me production credit on the track ‘Real.’  That was cool… Kendrick heard our music and got my number from a mutual friend.  Then we started working together. I also sang background vocals on a couple of his prior tracks ‘Cartoons & Cereal’ and ‘Westside, Right On Time.'”

Check out some of Sonnymoon’s music below and hear what made Kendrick decide he needed some of this on his album.
