The Best EDM Of The Week

1.

In our efforts to not turn this into an EDM site, we’ve been saving all of the best in EDM for this week to present them to you in one shot. Our 10 picks from the varying scenes (trap, dubstep, drum & bass and more), in the form of videos, mixtapes and free track downloads. This week features the likes of Reso, Trap-A-Holics with an EDM trap tape (!), interesting videos, and even a couple of sick mixes from the likes of Starkey, TC and Zeds Dead.

Reso – “Aegis”

This week, big news from Reso came from FACT; not only does he have an album dropping on the 5th of November (Tangram on Civil Music), but Reso also will be releasing his Check 1, 2 EP on October 15th. He also let his tune “Aegis” go for free, and if you’re new to Reso’s sound, and dismiss the wobbly brostep sounds of dubstep and other forms of bass music, you’ll find yourself right at home with this one. Very calm, with engaging beats that keep you grooving but don’t push the listener away. Very chilled listening. He can go a bit rougher than this, but this is a great opener to get your weekend moving along smoothly.

Brackles ft. Cherri V – “Chasing Crazy”

UK Funky is one of those scenes that many don’t champion as loudly, but when you find a track that you can embrace, you should definitely big it up! Fans of the UK garage and 2-step might be enamored by this one. Brackles has been making a name for himself with releases on Blunted Robots and Rinse, who released his debut album earlier this year. His Chasing Crazy EP has remixes from DVA and Trim, and is highly recommended if you like tunes around this end of the spectrum. Lovely vocals from Cherri V atop that serious sub-bass are all you really need to get any party started.

4.

Dusk + Blackdown – “Apoptosis”

Dusk + Blackdown are two figures from the UK bass scene that you should already be aware of. A lot of grime’s coverage can be traced back to the work Blackdown has done over the years, and while tracks like “Apoptosis” might not be the normal sound you would throw in with grime, it still knocks, and wild visuals like this should be studied. We’re not sure of the science behind “Apoptosis” (although there is some description at the beginning of the video), the quick cuts pair up with the track perfectly. Feels like the scattered thoughts of the previous night’s massive rave put to music. Toe tapper right here, for sure.

5.

TC – Don’t Play Podcast 008

Kicking things up a notch, we’ve got the latest installment of the Don’t Play Podcast, with Don’t Play head TC at the decks. The best thing about TC is not just that he plays what he wants, genres be damned, but he has a personality. So often the artists within the varying EDM scenes don’t know anything about charisma, and here’s TC getting excited about tunes and rewinding, playing sounds of glass breaking and BRRRRAP when a tune he loves is on. That personal feel you kind of wish you could see and hear more of these days. Loads of new bits, including his new single “Do You Rock?” alongside tracks from Metrik, TNGHT and plenty more.

Trap-A-Holics Certified Trap: Reloaded

Kind of odd to see Trap-A-Holics getting that EDM love, but with the trap scene in EDM blowing up this year, the producers have grown to appreciate his work – and vice versa. He put his stamp on the Trap Bubbling tape with Munchi, and now has his own solo tape, with new and exclusive trap offerings from the likes of Bro Safari, FKi, DJ Wonder, CRNKN, ETC!ETC! & Brillz, Gents & Jawns, Heroes x Villains, DJ Swizzymack & David Heartbreak and a host of others. 37 tracks in total. If you love the trap sound, you could do much worse when it comes to dedicating time to rocking to a mixtape of this caliber (believe us, we have).

Мишка presents Keep Watch Vol. XXXIV: Starkey

Philly’s own Starkey has been on a roll. Not just this year, but over the last 3-4. He’s just creating heaps of gold, and really helping establish the bass music (particularly the grime sound) in the US, putting his own spin on it but staying true to the roots of the sound, which he calls Street Bass. As good as his productions and releases via Slit Jockey and Seclusiasis are, his DJ mixes are becoming things of legend, and Mishka recently tapped him to contribute to their Keep Watch series. What he turned in was a 46-minute journey through the lands of bass, with heavy doses of his own productions alongside cuts from Baauer, Mr. Mitch, MRK1, DS1, Plastician and more. We dare you to drop this then just sit in your chair. If you can pull that off, you’re either comatose or dead. Download and tracklist via Mishka’s soundcloud page.

Мixmag’s MOTW: Zeds Dead

Canadian duo Zeds Dead is perfect for people who like a plethora of sounds. They burst on to the scene and have kept crowds hype with dubstep anthems like “Adrenaline”, so it makes sense that Mixmag pegged them with for their Mix of the Week series. This one has everything, from Santigold and Wiz Khalifa to Shimon & Andy C, Potential Bad Boy (!), Birdy Nam Nam and P Money, as well as their own original productions and remixes. Thank us later.

10.

RL Grime – “Flood”

One of the gripes we heard from the Definitive Trap list was the fact that the RL Grime & Salva remix of “Mercy” wasn’t included. There was no slight or gripe with the remix, aside from the fact at when you’re trying to define a sound and it’s layers, the decision came down that the sound was already represented. RL Grime is a beast, and this week’s free download “Flood” is definitely representative of the Trap sound we’re loving. He takes it a bit more rave-y, with the build-ups and breakdowns (the basstone drop is so serious), to where you have no choice to stand on whatever cubicle/desk/dinner table/bar is closest and throw some bows. Hopefully you’re with a group of friends who are doing the same thing, or you could get kicked out/grounded/arrested. Throw bows safely, trappers.

11.

Baauer – “Harlem Shake (Cable’s “Essex Shuffle” Rework)”

This one’s been bubbling on dubplate for a minute (read: two months or so), and Cable finally let this one fly for free, via BNTL. Mistajam, Spooky, Starkey and Shiftee are among the selectors who have already been championing this spin on Baauer’s infectious anthem, bringing it to the grime state of mind. The drums are kicked up a notch, with a dope pattern thrown about from the existing material. Really hype tune, you’d be a fool to not grab this one and blast it. And keep the name DJ Cable close, he’s got some projects on the way that will seriously have you wondering why more producers aren’t testing the Trap waters more often.

12.

Delerium – “Silence (Kid Cedek ‘Dondi Lives’ VIP)”

Rounding this one out is an original production from Kid Cedek, a younger producer and DJ who’s been making noise over the last year. He listed it as a VIP of Delirium’s “Silence” because of the vocal, but the rest is original production. This is actually a tribute to his friend Dondi, who recently passed, and has been getting a lot of love during his live shows. Big sound, big of the moombahton sound, if you guys are unaware. Watch out for this guy – he’s apparently got a 10-track free EP coming before the end of 2012, entitled Circus Freaks.
