Out of every Purity Ring song I’ve heard, “Belispeak” is not the obvious choice as a first single. All of them would work, but I might list “Ungirthed” or “Obedear” as a little more immediate. This is, however, the one track I wanted to see a visual interpretation of. Ever since the plaintive “Grandma, the water is rising” line kicked off the first chorus I was hooked, coming up with stories to explain these chilling, sweetly delivered lyrics.

Luckily, the band delivers with a video that is clearly closely tied with the lyrical content, albeit in a very impressionistic way. These are visuals that suit the band: avant-garde, a little disorienting and beautiful in a way we haven’t seen before. Purity Ring’s Shrines is due out July 24th, and below the video you can check out their (expanded) summer tour dates, which could feature Dirty Projectors, Wye Oak or Evian Christ.
