Marina & The Diamonds - "Primadonna (Evian Christ Remix)"

1.

Evian Christ makes off-kilter, bass-heavy instrumentals, and his Kings And Them mixtape has been one of the coolest out-of-nowhere releases to hit the web in 2012. We’re huge fans, but it was very surprising to see the UK newcomer tapped to remix Marina & The Diamonds’ latest single. Where Evian’s productions are on the hazy, dark, DIY end of the spectrum, this track was built on a poppy, muscular electro beat from Dr. Luke, head of the current oligarchy determining the Top 40 sound; they’re about as close to polar opposites as you can get.

The end result can testify to the differentials in production. Evian Christ owns this remix and turns it into a product of his universe and remarkably fleshed out sound, stripping the original and using it to construct an entirely new composition. Marina’s vocals, already the most interesting part of the song, sound like they’ve been put through a blender and pasted back into a place, a sonic ransom note. Some are lyrics are chopped, other phrases reversed and all sound completely reappropriated for a remix that’s singular in its desire to be its own standalone piece of music. It succeeds, and in its own way is much more fascinating than the original.
