Los Campesinos! singer Gareth is one of the best songwriters I’ve ever heard. He combines mundane, hyper-realistic details with over-the-top emotional statements and surprisingly funny wit into the kind of songs that beg to become personal anthems to everyone who hears them. I realize how stupid that last sentence sounds. I’m gonna leave it though, cause hyperbolic shit is Gareth’s bread and butter and I kinda want to be more like him. He makes lines like “It’s only hope that springs eternal, and that’s the reason why it’s dripping from my broken heart” absolutely work, despite those words looking pathetically melodramatic on the page. It probably helps that he’s got a great band backing him up.
Both of the below tracks are off of the next Los Campesinos! album, Hello Sadness, which is due in mid-November. It’s going to be great. And probably a little sad.
