The first word I would use to describe this song would be anachronistic. Not because it sounds out of place in 2011, I’m not sure anything can at this point. Just because it combines two artists that are making music that sounds like it’s from another decade. No one’s really sure what Theophilus London‘s doing, or what era of music he has in mind, but the confusing blend he’s got going is definitely working. And Diamond Rings is firmly rooted in the 80’s, his sound is very synth-pop and David Bowie with modern indie-rock sensibilities all over the place.
Their combination is unsurprisingly dope. Diamond Rings’ additions to “Why Even Try” are what characterize this reimagining and it’s a really good entry point for his sound. If you missed his debut album Special Affections last year, go get it. Easily one of my favorite records of last year, on that top 10 status.
