P&P Interview: Rai Knight

1.

P&P has done a few interviews in the past, but it’s never been our thing. Part of the reason is because we didn’t really see what we could bring to the table that would be unique. The other night, Midas and I were brainstorming, and we came up with a cool idea. Let’s just ask short, random, fun questions. None of this “What’s your creative process like?” kind of stuff. Calling it an “interview” is a stretch, but here it is – the interview, P&P style, with Rai Knight (pronounced “rye”), the edgy Detroit pop artist who recently dropped the excellent mixtape, Self Portrait (download it here). Just to be clear, those are my comments in the brackets/italics. Not trying to make Rai look like a schizophrenic.

Ready, go…

SWEET!! I LOVE questions…. ^.^

If you had to pick one genre of music to listen to for the rest of your life, what would it be?

David Bowie… genre of one. His is the only music that doesn’t stress me out… like doesn’t make me think about my own music. He gives my head a break.

Are you a fan of Eminem?

errrm…. if I say yes, does that mean I have to be a fan of Kid Rock too? hahaa… nah but yeah, I think hes got clout. If he ever wants to do a track together… I’ll be a fan for LIFE.

Favorite food?

umm…. I could eat steamed red bean buns for the rest of my life. The texture alone makes me giddy. Is that weird? [Yes, it is. I Googled these because I didn’t know what they were. They look delicious. Not gonna lie, I’m a little giddy just looking at them.]

Hit the jump for the rest…

Were you popular in high school?

Some of the popular kids liked me, but I couldn’t hang. The whole “climbing up the social ladder” thing didn’t appeal to me…. I’m too introverted. I think I was a favored “independent” by all clicks.

Got any plans for new tattoos?

I’m always waiting to get another one. I never plan it though. It’ll be like, I’ll get the itch REAL bad, and something just comes to me. I draw it on my body that night, and go and get it the next day. I don’t like to put too much thought into it… further more, as long as it’s a sterilized needle, I don’t even care how good of an artist you are… I say, the squigglier the BETTER.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be?

Wow… tough one. I like an artist who’s got a chip on their shoulder, but knows how to give a good message, has integrity, and likes to constantly explore musical boundaries… shall I just post an ad?? Nah… but I think it would be cool to do a track with the chicas that inspired me to do the damn thing… Gwen Stefani and Robyn…. preferably both on one track^.^

Beer, wine, or liquor?

Wine at home, beer at the bar, liquor if I’m dancing.. haha… but erm… I really don’t drink that much. Hard on the vocal chords you know. [Yeah, I know. I can’t sing for shit.]

What’s hanging on your bedroom walls?

And illustrated silk screen poster of David Bowie, a stupid illustration I made (me being grumpy and wearing a dinosaur head for a hat), and a post card that says, “you are something that the whole world is doing”.

What was the first album you ever bought?

Micheal Jackson, “Dangerous”, and Mc Hammer, “Please Hammer, Don’t Hurt ‘Em”… on cassette… with my allowance. [Oh shit! My first album that I bought was Dangerous too! It’s official, I love this chick.]

Would you ever date a blogger?

is this blogger super cute? [“Super” cute? Nope. Damn, high standards. Call me?]

Pigeons, or planes?

Pigeons!
