Joell Ortiz - Sing Like Bilal

1.

These days, it’s rare (#rare, shout to Lil B) to discover new songs on the radio. Usually the songs you hear on the radio are the same songs that you heard on the internet a few months ago. “Sing Like Bilal” is an exception for me (Yeah, I know it was on the internetz, but that must have been one of my “lost days”. I have those.) This track has been on heavy rotation on Hot 97 for a while, and the more I hear it, the more I love it. DJ Premier’s production on this one is fucking ridiculous. No flash, no hand claps, just a troublesome bass line and dusty drums cracking on some 90’s nostalgia.

I don’t know how big Joell Ortiz is outside of NY, but he’s kind of a big deal around here. The half Puerto Rican Brooklyn representative is part of Slaughterhouse (with Joe Budden, Royce Da 5’9″, and Crooked I), and he gets a lot of love in NY. He’s got a sharp tongue, a smart wit, and a no bullshit kind of way of getting to the point. Check this one out if you haven’t already heard it.
