Antony and the Johnson’s breakthrough second album I Am a Bird Now won the UK’s prestigious Mercury Prize in 2005. The highly anticipated full-length album from Antony and the Johnsons, The Crying Light, will drop on January 20th.
I first got into Antony and the Johnsons because of Antony’s voice. It is hands down one of the most unique and easily recognizable voices in music today. Even when he lends his voice to others, like Hercules and the Love Affair for “Blind”, which is a very different style of music, he can be identified as soon as he sings the first word. I Am A Bird now was very strange to me, and hard to get into, but I also found a lot of beauty in it. I don’t know if Antony is gay or straight or niether, but his music comes across as very sexual…kind of like Lou Reed’s Transformer, but a little more subtle. By the way, Lou Reed contributed to A&J’s first album, and he and Antony have performed together in the past.
