Usher Says a Jermaine Dupri and Diddy 'Verzuz' Battle Would Be a 'Great One’

Usher was asked about the proposed battle, shortly after Diddy rejected Dupri's challenge to step into the ring by saying he doesn't have "enough hits."

Usher has weighed in on the proposed Verzuz showdown between Jermaine Dupri and Sean “Diddy” Combs.

Dupri took to social media this week to seemingly challenge Diddy to a music battle, saying the Bad Boy Records boss will “need some training for me.” Diddy responded to the video by declaring Dupri an unworthy opponent, and that the only artist he’d go up against would be Dr. Dre.

Fans and hip-hop figures, including T.I., pushed back against Diddy’s bold statement, insisting Dupri had accumulated enough hits to take on the NY legend. They pointed to his work as a recording artist as well as the slew of classics he helped produce for acts like Mariah Carey, TLC, Bow Wow, Xscape, and, of course, Usher.

Shortly after Diddy’s comments, TMZ caught up with Usher in Hollywood and was asked to share his thoughts on the matter. TMZ brought up Diddy’s suggestion that he would destroy Dupri in a Verzuz battle because Dupri simply didn’t have enough hits under his belt. Usher disagreed.

“Being a part of the hits that [Dupri] has, I can’t say that. He has plenty of hits and I think that Diddy does, too. It’s hard for me, ‘cause they both my brothers,” Usher said. “It could definitely be a great one.”

The Grammy-winning artist went on to say that the point of Verzuz is to celebrate music, and would enjoy seeing some of the greats go head-to-head.

“I don’t think one is greater than the other,” he said, referring to Dupri and Diddy. “If it were JD and Puff, or it was Dre and Puff, or it was Tip and 50—that’s the one I really wanna see. Tip and 50.”
