After making a significant splash with her chart-topping debut single “Drivers License,” Olivia Rodrigo has followed up the song with “Deja Vu.”
Accompanied by a video directed by Allie Avital and co-starring Talia Ryder, the glistening new track is a worthy follow-up to Rodrigo’s hugely successful No. 1 single. “The concept of deja vu has always fascinated me and I thought it would be cool to use it in a song around the complex feelings after a relationship ends,” she said of the release. “I started writing and recording ‘Deja Vu’ last fall and had so much fun creating the different melodies and sonic textures that you hear throughout.”
Produced by her frequent collaborator Dan Nigro, “Deja Vu” is the second single from Olivia Rodrigo’s debut studio album, set to release on Friday, May 21 via Geffen Records.
“It was really important to me and to my team that we didn't just put out another ballad after ‘Driver's License,’” Rodrigo told Zane Lowe of the new song in an interview on Apple Music. “You know what I mean? We wanted to show that I am a very versatile songwriter, and I love all different types of music, and I create all different types of music. And so we had picked out ‘Deja Vu’ to be the second single after ‘Driver's License,’ we've had that picked out for months. And so, yeah, it was sort of just a natural progression, I think it's a nice introduction to all of the other things that I can do."
