It’s been a big year for Young6ix. We last touched base with the 19-year-old drill artist in May, and caught up with him again this month to see where he’s at.

Boy has he been busy. He’s been ramping up the frequency of shows, spending time in the studio, and working on his second HOODRICH campaign in collaboration with JD Sports. However, simultaneously—and in his own words—6ix has also found that his world has slowed down. The reason? Becoming a dad to his now 3-month-old daughter, Lyric.

He sat down with Complex AU to talk about becoming a dad, his latest single “Spin It”, and where he hopes to take his music going forward.

6ix, it’s good to have you back man. It’s been a couple of months since we caught up. Back then, you’d just welcomed a baby girl. How’s it all been since then?

Honestly, I’ve been having a lot more family time—I’ve just been chilling with my daughter, my missus, and my mum. I’ve also been in the studio, doing a lot of shows, a bit of modelling, and preparing for my EP.

Sounds like there’s a lot going on for you at the moment, and congrats again on becoming a dad! She was 2 weeks old when we last spoke. How old is she now? What’s it like being a dadlike?

She’s 3 months now. Being a dad has been great, I’m happy. Honestly, it’s kinda crazy having someone that looks like you, who’s so tiny. And she’s always there. I think I’m a lot more patient as a person, and things have slowed down a bit. My mum is really great and helps out a lot as well—she takes care of Lyric a lot of the time, when I have shows on and stuff.

So, I’ve heard you have a new track coming out later this month, what can you tell me about it?

So, the track is called “Spin It”, and it features Namz and is produced by Solo and Pax.This track means a lot to me. There’s been so much going on, and I think I just had a lot to express on this one. It’s just talking about our life, and the stuff we did. It’s vibey and it’s danceable and [high] energy.

We’re so excited to hear it. How’s a full body of work coming along? Do you have any word on when we can expect it?

Yeah, I’ll have an EP coming out soon, and I’m spending as much time as I can in the studio. I’m trying to get at least 6 or 7 tracks on there. I want it to be versatile, but I also want it to have banger after banger. It’s going to be a lot of different stuff.

I’ve seen that you’ve been doing more shows too, and that you recently opened for afrobeats artist Rema—which was interesting because as genres, drill and afrobeats feel worlds apart. What’s the experience of performing like for you?

Yeah, opening for Rema was crazy, but it was nice, and I’m glad it all worked out. But yeah I’ve been doing more shows, a lot of pop-ups and that. I think about a year ago was my first show. I haven’t been performing for a long time, but I seem to be improving every time. I love it. I’m always nervous and I still get scared before each performance, but once I go on stage, it’s just like I’m talking to the crowdand they’re talking back.

Yeah, I always think about that transition for artistswhen it comes to going from solely releasing music, to actually beginning to perform and do shows.

I guess I knew what I was signing up for when I started.

Switching gears, you’re back with your second HOODRICHcampaign in collaboration with JD Sports, which is kinda crazy given that it’s such a massive brand. How does it feel to be the face of Hoodrich here in Australia?

Man, I don’t even know,it’s amazing. Me and my mates, we were all wearing HOODRICHbefore this whole campaign ever started. Now that I can say—like, I don’t want to say it—but I’m the face of HOODRICHhere, it’s crazy. Crazy. And I love the JD team by the way. They’re really nice people.

So, to finish off, where do you see your career going in the next 12 months? What are you hoping to do?

Well, I want to do an Australian tour. I’m tryna go to Melbourne and Brisbane, everywhere really. There’s the EP, and I also just want to continue raising my daughter. And I’m trying to stay as professional as I can.
