Some 400-plus drivers were caught speeding in Toronto over the last 18 months, but evidently, DJ Charlie B and Roy Woods weren’t among them. We’ve deduced this much from the triumphant tone on their new single, “Speeding.”

The track, featuring a shadowy, marauding beat by Charlie B, hears Woods sing about peeling out through the city’s highway with his demons, before regaling us with tales from his fast-paced life. Despite his apparent hurry, the OVO Sound artist sounds decidedly unflappable here, gliding over the track’s dusky keys and speaker-shaking rumble with a flow slippery enough to evade the most hawk-eyed of traffic cops.

The accompanying music video, helmed by Zac Facts, catches scenes of Charlie and Woods ripping around in a supercar and chilling in a parking lot enveloped by clouds of hazy smoke. Later, they turn up in the back of a cube truck while getting shipped around like the precious cargo that they are.

“Speeding” is the latest in a hot streak of singles from DJ Charlie B in collaboration with some of Toronto’s most promising rising rappers. Last month, the OVO affiliate dropped “Glitch,” any icy, rags-to-riches bop featuring Pressa. Over the winter, he blessed us with “Water Whip,” featuring 2Kz and YTN Paco. And last summer, he and NorthSideBenji ignited airwaves with “30,000 ft,” which Complex named one of the Best Canadian Songs of 2021.

Looks like he’s not done applying pressure. Charlie tells us he’s got an album, dubbed Across The Board, coming soon.
