Benny the Butcher Talks Misconception on Who Owns Griselda Records, Shares Freestyle Over DMX Beat

Ahead of the Friday release of his new project Tana Talk 4, Benny the Butcher sat down with Apple Music 1 host Ebro Darden to discuss a variety of topics, including the state of Griselda Records.

In a clip from Ebro’s upcoming interview with Benny, which premieres Thursday at 3 p.m. ET on Apple Music 1, the Buffalo rapper opened up about Conway the Machine’s recent departure from Griselda, clarifying that Conway’s brother, Westside Gunn, is the sole owner of the label.

“I’m gonna break something down for you,” Benny began. “We’re going to always be crew… I don’t think Conway is still signed to Griselda, but that’s ‘signed’ to Griselda. He’s going to always be Griselda. And no, West is the sole owner of that.”

Benny added, “I think that’s one of the big misconceptions is that they own it together. But that’s West’s baby. Like Conway tell you if West own a building, he did the construction type of thing.”

The interview arrives on the heels of Conway’s appearance on Ebro’s Apple Music Rap Life Radio show, where he explained that the Griselda rappers’ busy schedules have made it difficult to “really connect all the time.”

“It ain’t nothing to even trip off, for real,” Conway explained. “I don’t know what’s going on…  everybody just doing so much man, just on the individual side that we don’t really kinda be having the time to really connect all the time and link. We don’t all live in the same city no more, we don’t really hang out and do shit no more, see each so all these conversations we don’t necessarily get to have all the time.”

During an appearance on the Bootleg Kev Podcast in February, Conway confirmed that he’d left Griselda and Shady Records.

“I’m contractually done now,” he revealed. “Sitting right here right now, I’m not on a contract with Griselda, Shady none of that shit no more. It’s free agency right now you heard. I need that supermax man, I need that Giannis bag.”

Although his days at Griselda are done, Conway did not rule out the possibility of one day returning to the label.

“We haven’t really talked about that who knows, I mean that’s all of our intentions,” Conway said. “It’s definitely mine. But I’m just saying as of right now, like it’s the end like you know. The paperwork I signed has been fulfilled, it’s been fulfilled. It was all in together, like my Shady paperwork and Griselda paperwork, everything’s been fulfilled. And now it’s time to sit back at the round table and figure out the future is and what it got in store for me.”
