Last month, a certain rumored 2013 incident involving J. Cole and Diddy received renewed attention thanks to the Off-Season track “Let Go My Hand.”
In the track, which features an outro prayer from Diddy, Cole reflected on a period in his life in which he was “scufflin’ just to save face,” noting in the verse that his “last scrap” was with Diddy:
“I bought that n***a album in seventh grade and played it so much
You would’ve thought my favorite rapper was Puff
Back then I ain’t know shit, now I know too much”
Now, the incident—claimed to have occurred at an MTV Video Music Awards after-party in New York City in 2013—is going further full-circle thanks to an impromptu Instagram clip from Diddy.
In the clip, Cole and Diddy are seen seemingly prepping to take a quick picture together. When Cole playfully takes a fighting stance, laughter erupts as Diddy joins him in holding the pose for a few seconds.
And as for the photo, that also came to pass:
In August of 2013, sources claimed that Diddy and Cole had both been involved in an incident they alleged as having been spurred by Kendrick Lamar’s “Control” verse.
According to multiple sources at the time, Diddy was alleged to have been “visibly intoxicated” when he tried to confront Lamar over his “King of New York” line before—again, allegedly—trying to dump a drink on him. At this point, at least according to sources circa 2013, Cole intervened and ultimately ended up in a “brief scuffle” between his and Diddy’s respective crews.
Shortly after the rumored incident started popping up in headlines, Cole’s manager Ibrahim “IB” Hamad took to Twitter to point out that Cole was not thrown out of any party and he “damn sure ain’t get beat up.”
At any rate, all involved with this infamous rumored incident seem comfortable with joking about it. In fact, this doesn’t mark the first time both Diddy and Cole have referenced the incident in a tongue-in-cheek manner. Way back in October 2013, mere weeks after the rumored incident, a Revolt TV promo clip was billed as showing the fight “caught on tape.” In the video, Diddy pretended to get in a few hits before Cole joked that this footage was “evidence.”
