The Nov. 8, 2016 election brought the legalization of recreational marijuana to California, Massachusetts, Maine and Nevada. Texas was not one of those states, and as such, Paul Wall and Baby Bash are facing legal implications for being arrested on felony drug charges Dec. 23. Both rappers were charged with felony possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute. The charges stem from an event Paul Wall and Baby Bash attended in Texas, where Bash says two factors played a role.
“It was a little smoke out that got bigger than it should’ve been,” Bash told TMZ. The unexpectedly large crowd and the presence of concentrated THC doses in “dab” form are likely responsible for Bash and Paul Wall being flagged for intent to distribute rather than merely possession.
“I will fight vigorously to defend my client,” wrote Paul Wall’s lawyer, Jolanda Jones via a statement released Friday. Jones added that she believed her client would be found not guilty.
According to the Houston Chronicle, 10 other people attending the “Cannabis Community” event were also arrested. The two rappers previously collaborated on the album, The Legalizers: Legalize or Die, Vol. 1. Bash reportedly keeps residences in both Texas and California, and in his interview with TMZ, he said he owns a dispensary in California, and a mix-up over recreational marijuana laws was also partially responsible for his possible misinterpretation of Texas marijuana laws. Baby Bash and Paul Wall were arrested together in 2011 on similar charges.
Both Paul Wall and Baby Bash are free after posting $20,000 bond.
