Ashanti will soon join the ranks of Taylor Swift, after the Grammy-winning R&B singer announced on Tuesday that she’s re-recording her debut album.

“It’s so surreal,” Ashanti said about finally obtaining her masters during an appearance on the Tamron Hall Show. “I have an amazing legal team, and I got my first record deal when I was 14 years old, so understanding and seeing how things have changed so much from then to now and conceptually understanding what you’re singing is so imperative, it’s so important nowadays. The fact that I’ll be able to re-record my first album, and put everything together.”

The singer discussed finally owning the masters to her self-titled debut, much like Swift, who recently re-recording her album Fearless. “It’s so humbling. It is such an honor. I’m so grateful,” Ashanti told Hall. “It’s such a blessing, you know, the fact that we are still here, we’re living through a pandemic, and these blessings are still coming in, it just makes me so happy again, so humbled, and such a believer.”

Some people were initially confused as to why Ashanti would re-record her self-titled debut since she now owns the masters to the project. Regardless, the re-recording of a classic Ashanti record is exciting news, and the announcement comes as the project celebrates its 20th anniversary this coming April.

Ashanti most recently stepped out as a surprise guest during Fat Joe and Ja Rule’s Verzuz battle earlier this month, where she ran into her ex-boyfriend Nelly

“I really didn’t expect it, I didn’t know he was gonna be there, honestly,” she told Hall about the encounter. “So when I saw him kind of coming across the stage, I was just like, ‘Oh…’ and it was so weird because we haven’t seen or spoken to each other for over six years… so it was a weird feeling.”

That marked the second time the R&B singer was on the Verzuz stage, as she had previously competed in her own Verzuz against Keyshia Cole earlier in 2021.
