Tonight, a new episode of PBS' Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates Jr. will air featuring Nas. The episode is titled “We Come From People" and also features Academy Award-nominated actress Angela Bassett and senior adviser to President Obama Valerie Jarrett. But before the episode airs tonight, PBS released a clip of Nas' segment and it is downright harrowing.
In the clip, Nas discovers a receipt for the sale of his third-great-grandmother, Pocahontas. According to Gates, Nas' ancestor was about 14-years-old when she was sold for a mere $830.
“They paid $830 for my great-great-great grandmother?" asks a bewildered Nas. "I’ve got more than that in my pocket right now."
Nas continues on to discover a photo of Benjamin Franklin Little—the white slave owner who purchased his great-great-great grandmother.
“See, this is painful now," said Nas.
Catch the episode tonight on PBS at 8 PM EST.
