The ladies are, once again, taking over the Verzuz ring.
This Motherâs Day weekend, legendary girl groups Xscape and SWV (Sistas With Voices) are going head-to-head in a nostalgic battle of R&B hits. ATLâs Xscapeâmade up of Tameka âTinyâ Harris, Kandi Burruss, and sisters LaTocha and Tamika Scottâwas founded in the early â90s and were signed to Jermaine Dupriâs So So Def imprint shortly after. The group dropped their debut album, Humminâ Cominâ at âCha, in 1993. That project ultimately sold more than one million copies and blessed the world with classics like âUnderstandingâ âLove on My Mind,â and âJust Kickinâ It.â
Xscape would go on to deliver two more platinum-certified albumsâ1995âs Off the Hook and 1998âs Traces of My Lipstickâbefore taking a hiatus in theâ 90s. The group briefly reunited in 2005 with the plan to drop a fourth album, which never saw the light of day. Fast-forward to 2018 when Xscape gifted fans with their first-ever EP, Here for It.
Earlier this week, Burris took to Instagram to share a behind-the-scenes look at Xscapeâs preparation for the Verzuz event, suggesting they would play both old and new material.
SWV, which also formed in the early â90s, consists of Cheryl âCokoâ Gamble, Tamara âTajâ Johnson, and Leanne âLeleeâ Lyons. The NYC outfit shared their debut, triple-platinum album Itâs About Time in 1992 and went on to release four more albums up until 2016. Known for hits like âWeak,â âRight Here/Human Nature,â and âDowntown,â SWV has become one of the most celebrated acts in R&B music, and were honored with the Soul Train Lady of Soul Award in 2017.
