On the latest episode of the Million Dollaz Worth of Game podcast, Cam'ron broke down how he and Jay-Z quietly settled their differences after years of tension.
At around the 56-minute point of the interview, Cam was asked if he’s ever reconsidered releasing the remix of his 2002 track “Oh Boy” featuring Hov that never saw the light of day. “Hov did a remix for ‘Oh Boy,’ and I erased it,” he admitted, to which host Wallo asked why he didn’t keep the verse in the vault even if he wasn’t going to release it. “I should’ve,” he said. “Looking back on it I should have, because… Shit, I could’ve got some money.”
He went on to point out that Jay “erased” his verse from “One for Peedi Crakk,” so in a way he felt he could do the same to Hov. “I was just so caught up… I’m very, very petty, man. But looking back on that you made a great point, we should have kept it, and whether we used it or not we should’ve had it,” he continued. “That was just my mentality at the time.” Asked if he has seen Hov in recent years, he said they were able to team up again for a concert two years ago but that was the first time they spoke in “forever.” Jay brought out Cam'ron during a show at NYC’s Terminal 5 in 2019.
When he was asked to appear at the concert, he didn’t even hesitate and agreed to meet with Jay despite their issues during his time at Roc-A-Fella and Def Jam. “I was caught in the middle to be totally honest with you, because I didn’t want Dame [Dash] to feel a way,” he said, while noting that Jay and Dame Dash weren’t on the best of terms at the time. “I know they was going through they thing, but Dame had did something on the internet to where he kind of apologized to Jay-Z. … I was like, ‘If that’s where he at, cool.’”
He was “over” his issues with Jay by that point, but he didn’t want to create any issues with Dame since they were friends since the early days of his career. “Jay called, he’s like, ‘Yo first of all I want to tell you I got respect for you,’ and I’m like, ‘Same here bro,’” he said. “Shit ain’t no big thing, man. We talking about some shit, fucking 12-13 years old. I’m straight. … We just showed our love for each other, and we kept it under wraps.” He said since they didn’t announce the appearance, and Nas was also present at the show, it was a huge shock to the audience when the beat for “Welcome to New York City” started playing. “Nobody would’ve thought that in a million years.”
Cam laughed about the whole situation looking back on it, and pointed out that people “hate having to pick a side” when it comes to rap beef. “Especially in Harlem,” he said, noting that he’s had people approach him about being relieved they can listen to songs again after he patched on some of his beefs in the past. “Because of the power Hov got, n***as will be scared to fuck with you publicly,” he added. Some even told him that they “don’t want no problems with Jay,” even though, as Cam put it, “Jay don’t even know your bitch ass!”
Ultimately he was very happy to get the whole situation “out the way,” and he thinks it was “dope” how Jay handled it. Since the issues between them was played up a lot by publications and industry people, Cam suggested he didn’t get invited to certain situations since people wanted to avoid any potential drama between the two rappers. In one circumstance he recalled people acting up around him because they were cool with Hov, and he told them, “’I ain’t got no problem with nobody my n***a.’”
He also highlighted that it’s always been motivational for him to see how far Jay-Z has come, which led to him recalling when Kanye West rapped for him and Jay in the studio when he was really only known as a producer.
“I’m looking at him, I’m like, ‘This n***a kinda spitting but he kind of got the weird movement at times,’” he said, imitating the way Ye would move as he raps. “I told Dame, ‘That kid is spitting, yo.’ And Dame took the chance on him, and gave him the deal.” He recalled that he had “issues” with Kanye for years before getting to Roc-A-Fella on account of him showing a beat he loved, only for it to go to Jay. “He said I could have it, and Hov dropped it like two weeks later.”
