According to the sages over at TMZ, Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson’s relationship was heavily impacted by the death of Grande’s ex, Mac Miller. “In the aftermath of Mac's death, our sources say Ariana realized a couple of things—she couldn't be fully invested in her relationship with Pete, and she had rushed into a looming marriage way too fast by getting engaged,” TMZ reports.
This isn’t particularly shocking possibility, considering Grande and Mac dated for over a year and split only a couple months before she got engaged to Pete. Mac’s death in September clearly had an impact on the pop singer, who has since canceled a couple performances and is stepping away from public life.
"Given the events of the past couple of years, Ariana is going to take some much needed time to heal and mend," Grande's team said in a statement on Sept. 17. "She will be staying close to home and using this period to spend time with her loved ones and work on new music without deadline. She thanks her fans for their understanding."
Following the late rapper’s reported overdose, Grande posted a tribute to Miller writing, "I adored you from the day I met you when I was nineteen and I always will.”
TMZ broke the news of Pete and Ari’s apparent split on Sunday, though things seemed pretty good up until this point. The singer was even spotted at SNL on Saturday night, so it’s unclear what pushed the breakup, or if they really called it quits for good.
According to a source who spoke to Us Weekly, the pair haven't completely split up, but only canceled their engagement. “It happened this weekend,” the anonymous source said. “They realized it happened too quick and too early. The wedding is off, but they’re working things out. They’re not officially done yet.”
