The recording sessions for JAY-Z's 1998 track "Reservoir Dogs" were a bit tense.
During a recent appearance on Genius' For the Record, Jadakiss recalled the day The Lox were asked to appear on the song off Vol. 2, which also featured Beanie Sigel and Sauce Money. Jada said JAY's team had called the trio as they landed in New York following a weekend of shows. The Yonkers rapper said he and his fellow Lox members were down to collaborate ... but after they went home and dropped off their bags.
"So we're like, 'That's cool. We're gonna go home, put our luggage [away].' And they were like, 'Nah, [JAY] wants you to come there right now.'"
Jada said the request was both confusing and inconvenient.
"We ain't got carry-ons. We got big shit we had to check," he recalled. "So that put us on edge a little, 'cause we always lookin' at it like, 'If [JAY] just landed, would he just come to the studio with his luggage? No!' But that was a good edge."
Jada said they arrived after the studio shortly after, and began recording. Jada recalled he, Sheek Louch, and Beanie Sigel laid down their contributions on the first day, and Styles P recorded his verse the day after. But even with that gap, Styles was still feeling tight about JAY's short-notice. His frustration was on full display in his first few lines:
I don't give a FUCK who you are, so FUCK who you are
I don't care about a pretty bitch, watch or a car
I don't care about your block and whoever you shot
I don't care about your album and whenever it drop
I don't care about your past if I did I woulda asked
"He was going at Hov on there," Jada told Genius. "Hov was like, 'Well, it sounded like you talking about me on it.'"
Elsewhere in the interview, Jada explained his decision to push back his fifth studio album Ignatius. The project was initially slated to drop this week; however, Jada said he wanted to delay the project in wake of Pop Smoke's death.
"We held back to pay respect to Pop Smoke," Jada said. "It just didn’t seem like the right time to release the song or the visual or the project, so we just pulled it back for a week … We’re going to keep it rolling, but just paying some homage and respect with everything that’s going on right now."
Jada had previously pulled the Ignatius single "Huntin Season" featuring Pusha-T. The track included references to gun violence and lines about metaphorically killing rival rappers. Push shared a statement just hours after the song was pulled, stating the "Huntin Season" theme didn't sit well with him in light of Pop Smoke's fatal shooting.
Ignatius is expected to drop March 6.
