Kanye West Reportedly Interested in Starting a Church

The report comes in the wake of Kanye's Sunday Service experience at Coachella.

Both religion and spirituality have long played crucial roles in the artistic narrative of Kanye West. He put that career-long inspiration at the forefront earlier this month, with the Coachella edition of his Sunday Service experience. It was a livestreamed event that included everything from seemingly genuine moments of reflection to official socks emblazoned with "Jesus Walks."

Now, at least if People's sources are to be believed, West is said to be considering how to make the Sunday Service series a more permanent fixture by starting his own church.

"Say what you want about Kanye, but he really does want to help people who need support," one source told the publication, noting that West is aiming to "share his journey" and spends a considerable amount of time studying. "He understands brokenness and the need for healing, probably more than most people. He believes in the healing powers of music, but also believes that God can step in and heal people's brokenness and their issues."

The report's cited source goes on to claim that West "has talked about starting his own church, and what exactly that would be," though "no official plans" are in development.

While the source material of West's Sunday Service is clearly heavily Christianity-inspired, Kim Kardashian has suggested publicly that the intended approach is one from a more general perspective. Describing Sunday Service as a "healing experience," Kardashian told Jimmy Kimmel earlier this month that the gatherings contain no prayer or traditional sermon.

Prayer has happened, of course, including during the Coachella edition, when DMX (whose previous Sunday Service contributions include a very familiar prayer) rolled through.

And we'd be remiss not to mention Yeezianity, a fan-launched religion with a 5 Pillars breakdown that argues humankind "possesses the power to create everything he wants and needs."
