Russ isn't very popular among hip-hop producers this weekend.
Specifically, they're upset with a recently resurfaced VladTV interview, in which Russ said we need to blame producers for wack music—not rappers.
"People think that you blame the rappers for the state of hip-hop," he explained. "Rappers are not making the music. You gotta blame the producers. Producers are making wack shit. If all I do is rap and a producer sends me a pack of 20 beats, and they’re all wack and they all sound the same, I’m just fucked. I gotta pick the best of the worst."
Frank Dukes called Russ a joke and took shots at him for making music targeted at "people who are scared of rap."
Cardo Got Wings took a similar approach, calling Russ out for making watered down rap music.
London On Da Track kept things simple.
BigheadOnTheBeat—who originally helped resurface the VladTV interview in this video—focused on Russ' superior attitude when it comes to his place in hip-hop.
Waka Flocka and TM88 also shared their thoughts on the situation.
As the negative attention kept piling on throughout the weekend, Sango simply pointed out, "Russ done messed up."
Russ seemed to notice the blowback in his mentions, because he took some time out to clarify that he didn't "diss the producer community" as a whole and said there were some talented producers out there.
He said his main problem was with producers who were stuck making the same sounds as everyone else, leading to homogenized rap music.
Regardless of his clarifications, many hip-hop producers feel underappreciated as it is, and aren't pleased to see him discredit them with his VladTV comments. Of course, Russ is always quick to remind everyone that he doesn't need anyone but himself, anyway.
