That "Sweet Dreams" Remix Beyoncé Seemed to Drop Was Fake

No one knows how to react to the remix or to the revelation that it was an unofficial remix.

It's been a wild 24 hours in the Bey Hive. Yesterday, Beyoncé’s official TIDAL, Apple Music, and iTunes pages lit up with a brand new song: a remix to her 2008 single, “Sweet Dreams” off I Am… Sasha Fierce. According to Pitchfork, the song was credited to “IDS” on TIDAL, and the copyright was “℗ 2018 Beyonce” on Apple Music and iTunes. The trap-inspired remix is a departure from the high quality of Beyoncé’s usual projects, and it confused a whole load of people.

Then again, Bey practically invented the art form of dropping secret projects with zero notice. She’s known for raising the bar with each new project, so maybe this was just a risk she decided to take. Could it signal a new, somewhat nostalgic era in Bey’s music? With a Coachella appearance scheduled for April, could this mark the start of an onslaught of new music to be released before her performance? Of all songs, why would she choose “Sweet Dreams” to remix?

Well, at least some of those questions were answered today, when a representative for Beyoncé confirmed to Pitchfork that neither the artist nor anyone from her team was involved with the remix release. You can listen to a snippet from the mysterious remix below.

Most people were confused as to why Beyoncé would drop a remix to a song that came out ten years ago. It is the 10-year anniversary of I Am… Sasha Fierce, but the remix was just a touch too random, even for Beyoncé. Many fans were also annoyed that she would release a remix to an old song rather than release what they have been asking for for a long time now: namely, the Formation World Tour DVD or just new music (the only new music we can currently look forward to is a new Lion King song).

The fact that the song was fake and not affiliated with Beyoncé or her team in any way actually raises more questions than it answers. How did the song get on Beyoncé’s official pages? Also, how will Beyoncé make it up to her fans, who just spent a harrowing 24 hours trying to sus out what this remix means? Reactions were seriously all over the place: some liked it, others hated it, and still others were just plain confused by the surprise drop.
