Cardi B found herself on the receiving end of death threats after she was accused of dissing the Crips in a recent Instagram post: “I hate wearing Flue but this coat was too poppin,” she wrote in the caption. And it wasn’t a typo.
The term “flue” is commonly used among the Bloods as a way to avoid using the word “blue”—the primary color of their biggest rival gang, the Crips. Cardi has since deleted the caption and has disabled its comments; however, Nipsey Hussle said the “Bodak Yellow” rapper needs to do more.
In a recent interview with BigBoyTV, Nips addressed Cardi’s controversy and suggested she needs to “correct” the situation by explaining herself.
“If we just be honest, that's how Bloods talk amongst they self. Crips gon’ say certain words also. A Crip might say ‘dead’ instead of saying ‘red.’ A Blood might say ‘flue’ instead of ‘blue,’” he said at around the 11:30 minute mark in the video up top. “But the disrespect happens when you go public, and you’re not in the privacy of your hood or your homies, and you’re talking about that publicly […] You’ve never heard Nips say ‘dead’ or ‘slob’ in a record, based on the respect. What I realize too and what we learned growing up is that whatever you say in private, you gotta be able to say in public. If you not going to be able to walk into a room full of Crips and say that, don't say it […] At the end of the day, she's a woman, she's a female, everybody loving her wave, everybody loving her music, it's just something she should probably correct—go public and say look, ‘This is how Bloods talk privately. We ain't mean no disrespect.’”
Nips—who is a noted member of the Rollin 60s, a faction of the original West Side Crips—said he doesn’t believe Cardi’s life is in actual danger; however, he explained why her choice of words caused so much outrage.
“There ain't gon' be no shot against her gangster and what not, but that's a touchy thing,” he went on to say. “You gotta understand, people gonna be offended when you do that. You gotta know, L.A., this our culture, this our lifestyle, this ain't aesthetic or a fashion.”
It appears Cardi B heard his words. "It was never about fashion," she wrote in a since-deleted social media post captured by DJ Akademiks. The "fashion" comment appears to be in direct response to Nipsey using the same word.
