Swizz Beatz Says He Got the Best of Kanye West at Summer Jam '07

Swizz Beatz opens up about his iconic '07 face-off with Kanye West.

Swizz Beatz sat down with fellow New Yorker Fat Joe to talk fame, wealth, his Summer Jam battle with Kanye West in 2007, and the impromptu battle of the beats with Just Blaze on Hot 97 that occurred nearly a decade later.

On his new Tidal podcast series, Coca Vision, Fat Joe gives off-the-cuff interviews with friends and fellow musicians, and in this second installment with Swizz, he asked about the historic moment between him and 'Ye.

Fat Joe amps him up, giving the producer and Harvard grad high praise before setting up the question. "You war ready. Born for war. I wanna take it to Summer Jam. You and Kanye West. What made you think about doing that, what made you and 'Ye say we're gonna battle in front of Summer Jam?"

"I didn't wanna battle 'Ye," Swizz replied. "I wanted to battle a producer that was in production at that time, and a lot of those producers told me no, (at the time) which lead to the current battle with me and Just Blaze." Fat Joe slowed him down at that point, saying he'd get to the Just Blaze battle, but he wanted to hear Swizz's honest opinion. "Did you think you got the best of Kanye West?" Taking a brief moment to pause, Swizz answered, "On that particular stage, sure, yeah. I do."

Fat Joe seemed satisfied with his answer and let out a strong laugh. "Swizz, you got a charisma, and energy."

The rest of the interview delved into Swizz's next legendary moment of fulfilling his wish to battle another producer. "I watched what you did to Just Blaze. They woke me up in my sleep. We call that modern nostalgia," Joe said.
