After promising fans new music in 2018, Earl Sweatshirt was faced with an unexpected tragedy. His father, activist and poet Keorapetse Kgositsile, died at the Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa, last week. He was 79.

Earl was grateful by the outpour of support from his fans.

The rapper was scheduled to support the xx on their upcoming I See You Australian Tour set to kick off on Jan. 13 in Melbourne and run until Jan. 20 in Sydney. Earl was supposed to do his own headlining show on Jan. 14 in Melbourne, but he has decided to cancel all appearances in light of his father’s passing.

The announcement was made by Handsome Tour, an Australian tour promoter for the xx, Stormzy, Sampha, and others.

We regret to inform that, due to the recent passing of Earl Sweatshirt’s father, he must cancel his appearances as support for @The_xx this month. We sincerely apologise to those affected by this cancellation and send our sincerest condolences to @earlxsweat at this time.

Earl has not made any formal announcement about rescheduling his headline show in Australia. However, Kelela and Kučka will still be support acts for the xx this weekend. We’ll update this story as soon as more information comes in.
