Can't front: when I heard that Montreal's Kid Masterpiece and Philly's G0homeroger linked up to put together a mixtape inspired by HBO's hit series Insecure, I was kind of confused. Issa Rae and company are known for procuring some of the finest in hip-hop and R&B for the show... how can someone top that in mixtape form? Then I checked out their OVO Sound Radio Mix, and realized they were right for the job.

Their mix, Hella Insecure, came out of the duo being "big fans of Issa Rae’s Insecure and writing, and especially all the music her and her music supervisor Kier Lehman do." They took a different approach with the mixtape, though. Instead of just putting together two soundtracks worth of tracks in the mix, they gave it their own spin, imagining "what it would be like scoring an episode." Diving further into the concept, Kid and G0 "tried to find new music and hidden gems on SoundCloud" as well as throwing in an "underrated Frank Ocean song at the end to tie in with the show’s constant hidden references to the singer’s lyrics."

"Hopefully by listening to this mix," they continue, "it would be feel like listening to a episode on audio with the different moods of the music we chose and the show skits we layered throughout!" What you get is an entirely new experience where a tale is weaved through an intoxicating selection of tunes, bringing the curated pieces of the show to new heights. It's worth the listen, especially for veteran fans of the series.
