2017 is truly the year of Cardi B, and just because the year is winding down doesn’t mean she will. Following her Rolling Stone cover story last month, the “Bodak Yellow” rapper is on the cover of the latest New York Magazine, fulfilling a “dream” for the Bronx native. As you might have predicted, the accompanying interview is classic Cardi. As always, she has choice words for the haters and seems genuinely excited about her burgeoning career. But she’s also talking about other issues now, namely feminism and whether she thinks she fits into what the stereotypical feminist archetype (spoiler: not really.)
“You know what? I’m not even gonna consider myself nothing,” she says when asked if she would call herself a feminist. “Here’s the thing that bitches got me fucked up when it comes to that word. People think that being a feminist is a bitch that, like, went to school. They wear skirts all the way to their motherfucking ankles like a goddamn First Lady. That’s not being a feminist. Being a feminist is being equal to do what a man do. Ni**as hustle, and I hustle ni**as.”
This isn’t the first time Cardi has spoken out about feminism in a similar way. In a video from last year, she seemed to almost redefine the word.
It sounds like she’s distancing herself from that kind of talk now in an attempt to not be defined by what other people thing a feminist is or isn’t.
As the interview went on, she of course spoke about a big part of what has made the year so memorable for Cardi: her recent engagement to Offset. She’s been fantasizing about her wedding since before she was engaged to Offset. “The world is not ready for it,” she said about what her future wedding might look like. “Everybody got to be wearing red… And my bridesmaids are gonna be wearing suits, what’s good.”
But she also reveals that Cardi and Offset haven’t even had sex since being engaged. “The way I wanted to celebrate was just get real drunk and make love, and we haven’t even had sex after I got my ring!” she revealed. Of course, it should be noted that this interview was given a little while ago, so this information might not be entirely accurate.
But Cardi’s real achievement this year has been her widespread success, particularly with “Bodak Yellow,” which made its way to the top of the charts and broke records while it was there. But no matter how successful you are, there will always be haters. “I hate that people are trying to make excuses as to why it went No. 1. You know why?” Cardi says. “Because every time you hear it, your pussy pops. Your dick, it get up. Stop trying to discredit it.”
When it comes to looking at the future, Cardi might not have all the answers, but one thing is for certain: she wants to stay in music. “Music never felt like a job,” she explains. But with more success come more expectations and more obligations, and she also feels those pressures. “Now it’s just like people waiting to see if I fail. I just want to be an artist, I don’t want to be no fucking queen. I wanna hear myself everywhere. I would do fucking elevator music.”
Finally, Cardi’s success now means she has the money to do things she never thought possible before. As she raps in “Bodak Yellow,” she “got a bag and fixed my teeth”—and even made her dentist famous in the process—but she is also looking forward to getting some more work done. She puts it best when she says: “God makes everybody perfect, but sometimes He fucks up.”
The New York Magazine story reveals that she’s thinking about getting a nose job before the year is up. She’s never been shy about owning up to cosmetic surgery, and it’s her body and she has all the right in the world to do what she wants.
