Complex Sessions 019: Leftwing & Kody

Heralded by many as champions of raw, underground house music, Leftwing & Kody have, amazingly, only been DJing and producing together since 2012. Their debut EP, Bump & Flex on OFF Recordings, was an instant critical hit and immediately won over their peers and the industry. From there, high profile releases on the likes of Hot Creations and their own Lost Records, as well as a string of international tours have pushed them to the top of the interlocking worlds of house and techno. Despite achieving such widespread success and playing out shows and festivals usually reserved for the mainstream, the duo have remained steadfast in their underground, rolling brand of dance music.

This year, the duo released a string of EPs and singles on labels like Abode, Solid Grooves and Twisted Fusion. As the duo winds down from a global tour that's taken them everywhere from Brazil to the Channel Islands, we managed to grab them for long enough to put together this storming mix of bass-fueled house and techno.

Tell us a bit about your selections in this mix.

We included a lot of the tracks we are playing in the clubs right now — really drummy tribal rolling vibes. There's lots of new Lost Records tracks on there too.

What was the one track you absolutely had to include?

Michael Bibi's "Telling You" track is absolutely killing it for us at the moment. We knew we were onto something as soon as we heard it.

Any tracks that narrowly missed the cut?

There's a remix by Leon & Shaf Huse that we have been hammering but we couldn't include it in the mix as it's not released yet and we’re not allowed to put it on any play listed mixes.

What's the first single or album you ever bought?

Kody: First album was Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rocks It Takes Two. There was a track on there that first made me aware of sampling when I was younger called "Get On The Dance Floor" and sampled the Jackson's "Shake Your Body".

Leftwing: The first single I purchased was Jamiroqua's Virtual Insanity. I loved the neo soul funk era.

What's the last physical record you bought?

Italo Johnson - 08

What do you want to see happen musically over the next 12 months?

More innovation. There's some great music coming out at the moment with some artists really pushing the envelope and we are trying to do the same .
