Shawn Mendes has a message for burgeoning famous people: "Don't expect everybody to know who you are." During his appearance on the non-Kimmel Jimmy's late-night ordeal Wednesday night, Mendes tucked this very special message into a detailed account of a recent encounter he had with fellow Torontonian Drake's security team.
After Mendes shared a few anecdotes about Ed Sheeran and always being "mildly starstruck" whenever he meets a top-tier celebrity, he noted that Drake was someone who made him feel "really" struck with stars and whatnot. "When I got to meet him for the first time, it was like a weird thing, like, in my head, Drake was just like the god, because I'm from Toronto and I was, like, meeting him was this very crazy thing," Mendes said, before launching into a story about his most recent Drake moment.
"The other night I was in Toronto, I went to see the Weeknd," Mendes said. "I'm watching the Weeknd and we're up on this riser and Drake's also there watching the show along with, like, another few artists and stuff. And I go over, like, 'Oh that's Drake, I'll go say hi. He must remember me from previous experience, like twice.' So I go over and I go to like touch his side." And at this moment, Mendes said, he was placed in some sort of behind-his-back arms lock by Drake's "six foot six, 300 pounds" security guard.
Mendes then found himself in a hilarious predicament. "The next thing I know I'm, like, in the middle of the Weeknd show with my arm hooked behind my back," he said. "Drake's security guard has me just, like, completely at his mercy. And I'm like 'Oh no.' And I see Drake look over and in my eyes I knew it was like, 'Help me please, Drake.' In that moment if he didn't remember who I was, I would have just been so embarrassed . . . And luckily, he, like, looked at me and I saw him, like, put the things together in his mind and he realized it was me and he comes over and, like, grabs the guard. He's like 'Don't do that, you don't know who that is.' I was terrified."
Drake's team clearly doesn't fuck around.
