You're Wrong if You Think Selena Gomez's "Bad Liar" Is About The Weeknd

Selena Gomez said her song "Bad Liar" was written long before her relationship with The Weeknd started.

When Selena Gomez's new track, "Bad Liar" dropped in May, there was a ton of speculation regarding the lyrical content of the song. Fans initially speculated the song was about her famous ex, Justin Bieber, but that version of events was shot down by Justin Tranter, one of the songwriters credited on "Bad Liar."

Once Tranter suggested the song was about feelings for "someone new," the assumption became that Gomez's new song was about her new boo, the Weeknd. Their relationship has only recently been publicly acknowledged, and the lyrics about being coy could certainly apply to how their relationship unfolded in its early stages.

Not so fast, says Gomez, who threw doubt onto that interpretation of "Bad Liar" during an interview with Ryan Seacrest.

"The song actually was over a year ago," she said. "I was very much in a different place and I think it was more just telling a story ... it was just a different place in my life then."

Although this doesn't technically rule out the Weeknd—she could have been admiring him from afar prior to linking up early this year—it does make it rather unlikely the song is about him. If she's being truthful about when "Bad Liar" was initially put together, it would place the timeframe well before the two started cozying up to one another.

Gomez also spoke to Seacrest about the concept of being a bad liar, and dished on why she decided to take her relationship with The Weeknd public.

"I just think it's really hard when I would want to spend so much time hiding things, it's too much pressure. And I think everyone gets over everything eventually, that's what I've learned," said Gomez. "I just want to be happy. If that's me just being myself, then I don't really care."

Whether you choose to believe her side of the story is up to you, but you listen to the full interview up top and decide for yourself.
