Solange Pens Inspiring Letter to Her Teenage Self

Solange stays honest and inspiring in her letter.

Solange's latest album A Seat at the Table is the result of a person who has powered through the battles of trying to figure herself out and stay sane during the process. By expressing her fears, vulnerabilities, and frustrations in an extremely transparent manner, Solange delivered a brilliant body of work that continues to empower millions of listeners.

"I couldn't write for days, until I said fuck it...let's get real and honest baby solo," Solange wrote in an Instagram caption. Continuing with the raw honesty she shared on her album, Solange recently penned a letter to her teenage self for Teen Vogue. Started with an explanation of the many phases her younger self will go through, she later admits how each of these stages—no matter how embarrassing, strange, or difficult—will become a thread in the fabric of the woman she has become.

As fans, we've learned Solange likes to take her time with things. It's a conscious habit she's developed with time, but an important habit nonetheless: "You will take the long way to get to these Orions. The long way will become a theme in your life, but a journey you learn to love."

Although this letter is a personal one to her younger self, Solange's words serve as inspiration to anyone who may still feel a little lost or discouraged on their own journey to self. "When you go out into the world feeling confident in who you are and what you reflect, young folks will call you names and grown folks will call you names. It’s ok. One day you will name yourself, and that name will belong to you. It will not be the ones they ordained: 'crazy, ugly, attention-seeking, weirdo.'"
