Last week, we previewed some of Brampton's hottest up-and-coming talents. One of these acts was Staasia Daniels, who had a growing repertoire with some truly promising cuts. The 905 native stood out by complimenting rolling 808s with hypnotically smooth vocals.

After releasing the glossy "WISA" at the beginning of the month, Esdee now returns with "Laid Off". The new track, produced by Toronto's 5PiECE, improves upon everything she has released so far. Commanding the instrumentals with confident accents and melodies, Staasia brings us a real statement single.

The track comes in support of her new extended play, Hidden Gems, which is due out August 4th.

Speaking with Complex Canada, Staasia detailed her headspace during the writing process of "Laid Off". The singer dished on the meaning, and the origin of the song.

Tell us a little bit about where you were with the new song.

"You know the funny thing about laid off, is that I wrote it without a beat while I was vacuuming. It was just one of the many song ideas I had in my phone that I was planning on getting production for. One night 5PiECE was cooking up, and I really liked the groove. I started singing some of the ideas I had, and this one worked best. Xpress aka DJXP and EverythingOShauN were there with me, and I was like, yo...can this work, or nah?"

Where did the inspiration for "Laid Off" come from?

"Around that time, I had just gotten laid off, but I felt so rich in my spirit (feeling like I'm in the playoffs), Plus, any other title would have been boring, [laughs]  I wanted to have a song we could rock to, while still feeding our minds with positivity. Not another club turn up, or relationship record, but a song that can feed our faith, and help us to keep our eyes on the prize because ignorant people say nasty things to try and throw us off our game. Nobody can do what I do and  how I do it! They're hand in hand, and the same goes for anyone else out there. If you've got a dream you've gotta protect it, go get it and encourage yourself!"

Stream "Laid Off" below, and expect Hidden Gems, when it drops next Thursday.
