In an exciting twist that few saw coming, Rihanna unleashed a brand new single on Monday morning. Titled "Sledgehammer," the fresh track arrives as part of the soundtrack for the upcoming film Star Trek Beyond. Riri took to Instagram on Sunday to announce its impending release with a short clip and a caption that read, "Got something for y'all tomorrow. 🖖"
"Sledgehammer" is just the latest in a string of successes for Rihanna in 2016. In January, after months and months of heavy anticipation, she finally unleashed her eighth studio album, Anti, to near-universal acclaim, then stood back and watched it climb all the way to No. 1 on the Billboard album charts. Though the rollout was botched by Tidal, most critics agreed that it was Rihanna's strongest album to date. Shortly thereafter, she hit the road, playing stadiums on one of the hottest tours of the year.
The news about Rihanna's affiliation with the latest entry in the Star Trek series comes as a welcome bit of news after the tragic and shocking death of Anton Yelchin, who portrayed the fan favorite character Chekov in recent Star Trek films. Yelchin died in early June after his Jeep crashed into him, pinning him between the vehicle and the mailbox in front of his home.
Star Trek Beyond hits theaters on July 22. You can listen to Rihanna's new single below via Tidal, and check out a new Star Trek Beyond trailer featuring the song. Also, be sure to look out for Rihanna's first ever, IMAX music video for the song that is set to arrive June 30.
