For the past 4 years, the Prism Prize has sought to highlight Canadian achievements in music video direction. Following the announcement of 10 short list of nominees, the $10,000 prize for Canada's best music video was awarded last night at Toronto's TIFF Bell Lightbox.
Philip Sportel took home top honours for Kalle Mattson's "Avalanche" video, a visual marvel that impressively parodied 34 classic album covers, including records by Jay Z, Bruce Springsteen, Backstreet Boys, Michael Jackson, and more.
Other nominees included Drake, Harrison, Grimes, and A Tribe Called Red. In addition to the grand prize, a Special Achievement Award was presented to Canadian icon Director X, and the Audience Award went to director Eva Michon for Death From Above 1979's "Virgins."
Previous recipients include Noah Pink for Rich Aucoin’s "Brian Wilson is A.L.i.V.E" (2013), Emily Kai Bock for Arcade Fire's "Afterlife" (2014), and Chad VanGaalen for Timber Timbre's "Beat The Drum Slowly" (2015).
