Today Subculture Sage release their new mixtape, Big Smoke Autumn Blues, along with the video for lead track "Gold". In the Ricky Patel-directed video we see the hunt for gold in the dusty desert of Red Church (just outside Zimbabwe's capital Harare), set against MC Sage's rapid-fire bars and Subculture Sounds' swirling hip-hop production. For the most part—despite darker, trippier moments like "Mr Crack" and "Pitch Black"—the rest of Big Smoke Autumn Blues is a little slower, more reflective, but just as engaging. A neat balance of wit, self-reflection and bangers, this project is a shining example of what UK hip-hop can be when left to its own instincts.
