Occasionally, when you're listening to music, particularly pop music, an upbeat melody can quickly distract you from otherwise emotionally devastating lyrics. Here, for example, Dua Lipa takes on a taut, almost electro pop beat for her new single "Be The One" (out now), a track that could quite easily make some mainstream moves. And yet, the actual lyrical content, when you really pay attention, has the potency to get you right in the gut. "When you're gone / Oh, baby all the lights go out" she sings as you realise this seemingly strong, forthright artist is actually as vulnerable and prone to weakness as the rest of us. She knows her possibly ex-lover is no good, but she can't help but miss him—and that frustration, aimed both at herself and her (ex-)lover, gives "Be The One" an extra depth you don't often get in pop.
