Canberra’s Hau can lay claim to a lot of titles; national radio host, pioneering musician, Aria award winner. Amongst the accolades and achievements, Hau is also an avid rugby fan.
With his long-awaited solo debut, The No End Theory on shelves now, weekly hosting duties for Triple J's The Hip Hop Show and a young family to look after, the unfriendly British time zone has caused havoc with Hau's hustle. As the Rugby World Cup has unfolded however, the rugby aficionado can't manage to turn off the TV in the small hours of the night.
With the final only days away, we spoke to the Wallabies fan to get some insight around what we can expect when the Wallabies and All Blacks battle for global supremacy and four years of bragging rights.
They’ve played some really tough games, like against Scotland. A lot of people say they were lucky to win that, but I actually felt they were the better team. Decisions go against you, they go for you, that’s just sport. It can go either way. I thought they played well against Argentina. They scored tries, as opposed to just kicking goals. But New Zealand, even before going into the World Cup, they’ve been the favourites, they’ve been smashing every team. Even though the game against South Africa was close, they still looked like the better team. It’s gonna be an awesome game, I’m really looking forward to it. I actually can’t wait for it to be over so I can get back to normal hours [laughs].
Ma’a Nonu and Conrad Smith, they’re just so powerful in the centres. Even though we’ve got some great centres too, they’re just monsters. That might be there edge, to set it up for the forwards. Plus it’s Ma’a Nonu’s last game, so he’ll be looking to end his All Black career the right way. He’s playing the best rugby of his life the last few years, and even though the body will tell you when it’s enough, I think his experience is the reason he’s playing as well as he is.
Against Argentina, David Pocock was just amazing. It was like he was possessed! I think he’ll lead the way. I thought Israel Folau would [take the lead] too, but that last game he was so quiet. I kind of feel like he’s not quite over that injury, it’s playing on his mind and he’s not allowing himself to take those little chances like he usually does. So if the Wallabies are to win, I think it’ll be through the forwards, with Pocock leading the way.
I like Richie McCaw, and winning a World Cup would be an awesome send off, but – not at the Wallabies expense!
It’ll be almost like watching a boxing match, a slug-fest. I think it’ll be like that for the first 20 minutes. They’ll just try to bash each other, and then you’ll start to see the kicks going through to try to penetrate the line.
