Despite the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling this summer in favor of marriage equality, homophobia still runs rampant. Sam Smith who came out last summer in an interview with The FADER spotted a hateful and homophobic Instagram account attacking his sexuality with the handle @gaysamsmith. The profile used a picture of Smith’s wax figure at Madame Tussauds as the display image with an offensive bio that stated “WE HATE F——- SMITH. There is a f—, his name is sam. when he’s on, I like to cry. he is gay but that’s okay, we can all make fun of him.”

Smith went on to screenshot the account to his 4.5 million Instagram followers telling them all “This genuinely doesn't offend me, coz I'm way too [thick] skinned when it comes to this kind of sh*t. BUT I just wanted to share this with everyone, so you can see how homophobia is still SO PRESENT in our society!!” Following his post, the account was quickly shut down. While Smith can self-admittedly handle the hate, he shouldn't have to endure it and neither should anyone else. Bravo to the singer for using his social media platform to impose a positive change.
