The Polaris Music Prize aims to single out the most creatively fulfilling albums of the year, inspiring rabid debate between Canadian music fans. After announcing a hip-hop heavy 40 album long list, the top 10 contenders were announced this morning in a live Periscope stream conducted at the Carlu in Toronto, Ontario. BADBADNOTGOOD, Jazz Cartier, Tre Mission, and The Boy Drizzy Drake all made the initial cut. Let’s find out if they made it to the next round.

The 10 short-listed albums in contention for the 2015 Polaris Music Prize are as follows:

Alvvays – Alvvays
BADBADNOTGOOD & Ghostface Killah – Sour Soul
Braids – Deep In The Iris
Caribou – Our Love
Jennifer Castle – Pink City
Drake – If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late
Tobias Jesso Jr. – Goon
Buffy Sainte-Marie – Power In The Blood
The New Pornographers – Brill Bruisers
Viet Cong – Viet Cong

It’s a shame to see Jazz Cartier and Tre Mission knocked out of contention, but Drake and BBNG are in good company here.

The winner of the $50,000 prize will be chosen by an 11-member grand jury, and presented at the awards gala at the Carlu in Toronto on September 21st. It was also revealed that renowned Children’s performer (and writer of “The Cat Came Back”!) Fred Penner will be the host of the 2015 gala, so in a sense, we’re all already winners.
