An older entry on this list, but an important one: Hokkaido-based group Tha Blue Herb, composed primarily of founding members Ill-Bosstino and O.N.O., released their first album back in 1998, and started their first tour in 2000, appearing at the annual Fuji Rock Festival. They're notable for a reflective lyrical style, critical of celebrity and the Japanese music industry, as well as a sound that approximates '90s trip-hop.
