EDM's a funny scene. You have DJs like David Guetta and Skrillex talking outerspace and aliens (respectively), while a plethora of new school heads are getting bitten by the #RealDJing bug. For all of the recognition both of those themes (space and proper DJing) got on the Internets, DJ QBert was never thrown in that conversation. QBert was #RealDJing back in the early 1990s, and envisioned his truly next level scratch techniques as being a way to communicate with extra terrestrials. He ended up being placed in the DMC Hall of Fame, won the 1991 DMA USA championship, and was a DMC World Champion from 1992-1994 with Mixmaster Mike (those two were joined by DJ Apollo in '92). Once he was done slaying the competition, he took to experimenting with sound, dropping a number of well-received, intergalactic symphonies told with the turntables and a whole mess of future beats.
Today, Mass Appeal dropped QBert's latest mixtape, JellyFish Lazer Face, which is the culmination of Q's fall 2014 Extraterrestrium: The Guided Space Tour through the United States. With tracks from Mr. Carmack, LOUDPVCK, the mighty El-P (who many of you might know from the last two years as one-half of Run The Jewels), this tape lives up to Q's description of it: "an odyssey of future bass music." He even threw in some cuts from his forthcoming instrumental release, Extramentals Vol. 1. QBert perfectly navigates his way through that area of electronic music and hip-hop where things get very weird, very fresh, and VERY future. No tracklist, but it's free, and will fuck your entire mental up for 49 minutes.
