As far as music festivals go, Treasure Island Music Festival is a rare breed.
There aren't 40,000 people all trying to use the same outdoor bathroom as you, there's no Mad Max-style bartering where condoms and lighters have replaced currency, and there are only two stages as opposed to the usual half-dozen. Thanks to the show being held on an island in the San Francisco Bay, the entire event is capped at 2,000 people. We had a chance to catch up with Janelle Monae after her performance on the main stage to talk politics, gender equality, and the endless possibilities of the future.
