Last night in San Francisco, the Red Bull Music Academy held their latest Culture Clash. You remember those, right? When four crews battle it out, soundclash style, with the audience picking the winner. One of the competing groups was dear to our heart: as it was in San Francisco, the dirtybird crew was out in full force. While we imagine they'd held their own in the selection categories, they really tried to murder the competition with their Rolodex game–they not only got Major Lazer to come through and drop tunes, but they got West Coast veteran Too $hort to grace the stage. They also got Daft Punk–or two guys dressed up like Daft Punk–to play "Around The World." The jury's still out on if those were the legit androids, similar to the "sighting" in Ibiza back in August. Maybe someone spent those thousands of dollars on that handmade helmet.
Truth be told, the Triple Threat DJs (Apollo, Shortkut, and Vinroc) are serious competition, and ended up taking the crown. If you know their pedigree (those guys are a part of that deep West Coast turntablism history), you shouldn't be surprised. Them bringing out Crystal Waters to perform her classic hit "Gypsy Woman" was major, and reminds me of Trouble & Bass' Robin S pull.
